How to Drill and Tap Cast Iron

The crystalline structure of cast iron varies depending on the rate the steel was cooled. Cast iron drills differently than other types of steel due to the variations in the steel structure. When drilling rolled steel, the material drilled from the hole will work in a spiral from the tip of the drill bit. Cast iron emits numerous small chips of metal. Occasional hard spots in the cast iron can break the tip of a drill bit if you apply excessive pressure on the tip of the bit. Tapping a hole drilled in cast iron requires care to avoid breaking taps in the hole when you encounter a hard spot.

Instructions

    1

    Find the size of the fastener you need to thread into the cast iron on a drill and tap chart. Follow the line on the chart representing the fastener size to determine the drill-bit size. For example, a 1/4-20 threaded fastener on a drill and tap chart will show a 7 drill bit as an ideal size for the tap.

    Secure the drill bit from the set into the chuck of a variable-speed drill motor. Coat the drill bit with cutting fluid.

    Drill the hole into the cast iron by pumping the trigger of the drill motor to keep the rpms of the drill motor low. Coat the drill bit with additional cutting fluid if smoke appears in the drilling area.

    Install the correctly sized tap into the T-handle tap wrench. Coat the tap with cutting fluid.

    Insert the tip of the tap into the drilled hole. Pour additional cutting fluid along the tap and into the hole. Turn the tap wrench clockwise to start tapping the hole. Twist the tap wrench 1/2 turn counterclockwise if the tap binds in the hole. Continue alternating between clockwise and counterclockwise until you have a tapped hole. Remove the tap from the hole.

    Thread the fastener into the tapped hole. Run the tap through the hole if the fastener does not thread readily into the hole.

How to Remove Studs With Drill Bits

Studs stuck in place by rust and paint often refuse to move with hand tools. Any movement is often the stud breaking off below a nut threaded onto the stud. Removing a stud from its housing with drill bits serves two purposes. The first is to heat the stud while drilling, which breaks the bond between the stud and the threaded part. The second is that if the stud wont break free with the heat from the drill bit, the bit will remove the material from the stud until nothing remains in the hole. Using the correct drill bits will often reverse the stud from the part without extraction tools.

Instructions

    1

    Align the tip of a center punch with the center of the stud. Strike the punch with a hammer. Move the center punch. Repeat the procedure until you have a depression on the center of the stud.

    Secure the smallest drill bit from a left-handed drill-bit set into a drill motor. Coat the drill bit with cutting fluid.

    Set the tip of the drill bit on the center-punch depression. Pump the trigger of the drill to drill a hole through the center of the stud.

    4

    Increase the size of the drill bit in the drill motor. Coat the drill bit with cutting fluid. Pour cutting fluid down the drilled hole in the stud. Drill through the stud with the larger drill bit, using the previous hole as a guide.

    5

    Swap drill bits until the stud works free of the threaded hole or you can see the threads of the hole sticking through the remaining metal of the stud.

Air drills, also called pneumatic drills, run on compressed air fed by a tube from a compressor. The drills can be used for a variety of applications, including construction, masonry, road repair and vehicle maintenance and repair. Ingersoll Rand offers several pneumatic drills for different applications. Both replacement and performance improvement parts are available for Ingersoll Rands pneumatic (air) drills.

Housing assembly

    The housing assembly can be purchased for Ingersoll Rands models 7802RA and 7013RA. The housing assembly comes as a kit for either model. The part number for the 7802RA is 7802RA-A40 and the kit for the 7803RA is 7803RA-A40. The kit includes all the parts needed for the housing assembly for either pneumatic drill.

Inlet/Exhaust

    The parts for the air inlet and air exhaust must be purchased as an entire kit for the models 7802RA and 7803RA. The kit includes parts such as the inlet bushing, throttle valve, and exhaust silencer. The part number for the inlet/exhaust assembly kit is 7802RA-A50.

Other parts

    Other parts available for Ingersoll Rands pneumatic drills include the trigger assembly, chuck and motor. Many of the parts are sold as kits, although some, like the chuck, are sold individually. Ingersoll Rand recommends that parts for their drills only be installed by a professional as improper installation can result in personal injury.

    The parts for the drills are available from several independent sources and from Ingersoll Rand directly. Ingersoll Rands products, including the air drills, are backed by a warranty that covers repairs and parts. Tools can be registered for the warranty and warranties can be claimed on Ingersoll Rands website.
