How to Change a Fuel Pump on a 1983 Cadillac Eldorado
The 1983 Cadillac Eldorado featured an eight-cylinder 4.1-liltre engine with throttle body injection, or TBI. This type of fuel injection uses a low-pressure fuel pump to deliver fuel at a pressure of nine to 13 pounds per square inch. The fuel pump in the 1983 Cadillac is attached to the fuel tank, so a fuel pump replacement requires you to remove the fuel tank.
Instructions
- 1
Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery with a socket wrench, and open the filler door on the fuel tank. Detach the electrical wiring from the fuel-sending unit. Remove the cap on the pressure valve in the fuel line, and install G.M. tool no. J-5420 on the pressure valve. Wrap a shop towel around the valve, and tighten the tool to relieve the fuel pressure. Disconnect the tool, and replace the valve cap.
2Raise the rear of the vehicle with a floor jack, and siphon as much fuel from the fuel tank as possible. Disconnect the screw that attaches the ground wire for the fuel pump to the cross member under the vehicle. Detach the fuel lines from the front of the fuel tank.
3Place a wooden block on a jack stand, and support the fuel tank with the jack stand. Disconnect the screw on each side of the support straps for the fuel tank. Lower the jack stand slightly, and disconnect the electrical connector for the fuel pump. Lower the jack stand completely, and remove the fuel tank from the vehicle.
4Disconnect the lock nuts that secure the electrical wiring for the fuel pump to the fuel gauge tank. Turn the locking ring on the fuel pump counter-clockwise with a punch and hammer. Detach the locking ring from the fuel pump, and remove the fuel pump from the fuel tank.
5Install the new fuel pump by performing steps two through four in reverse order. Tighten the screws for the retaining straps on the fuel tank to 25 foot-pounds with a torque wrench. Connect the cable for the negative terminal on the battery with a socket wrench.
