How to Retrieve Engine Codes for a 1995 Chevy
You can retrieve the engine codes for your 95 Chevy using an OBD I code reader. A code reader may be purchased from any auto parts retailer. Engine codes are diagnostic codes sent from sensors in the engine to the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD I) computer. The computer stores the diagnostic codes and alerts you to any malfunctions via illuminating the "Check Engine" light on the instrument panel. Always retrieve the codes and have repairs made before attempting to reset the computer and turn off the warning light using the code reader.
Instructions
- 1
Locate the rectangular-shaped fuse panel cover underneath the steering wheel. Pull down on it from the top to open it.
2Look for the port just to the left side of the fuse panel. Plug the OBD I code reader into this port.
3Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "ACC" position, but dont crank the engine. This will turn on most scanners. If it doesnt turn on yours, look for the on/off switch on the code reader and turn it on.
4Wait for the code reader to retrieve the codes. Write the codes down on a piece of paper. Turn off the code reader, if necessary, and unplug it from the diagnostic port. Turn off the Chevy. Look up the meaning of the codes in the code readers manual.
