Chevy Blazer Fuel Problems

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there have been two safety recalls associated with Chevy Blazer fuel problems since 1991. These recalls were initiated because of potentially dangerous defects in the fuel systems of Chevrolet 1991, 1995 and 1996 models.

Reasons for Recalls

On June 17, 1991, General Motors recalled 102,885 1991 vehicles, including Chevy Blazers, because these automobiles were shipped with the fuel tank sender seal out of position. On Nov. 8, 1996, General Motors recalled 432,183 more vehicles, including Chevy Blazers, because the fuel tanks could leak. Per the NHTSA, a fire could result from either fuel problem.

Remedies

In the 1991 recall, authorized dealers replaced sender seals on the affected vehicles. In 1996, dealers installed additional shielding of the fuel tank system without removing or disassembling the fuel system.

Notification and Instructions

Registered vehicle owners should have been notified via mail by General Motors at the times of the recalls. Notifications should have contained instructions on where to bring the vehicles for repair at no cost to the consumer, as required by law. Concerned drivers who were not notified, or who bought vehicles second-hand post-recall, may contact the NHTSA to determine whether their vehicles might have been affected.
