How to Replace the Lash Adjusters
Lash adjuster is an obscure term for hydraulic valve lifter. In the days before hydraulic lifters, as well as some of todays high-performance race engines, most engines used solid lifters. Using solid lifters requires periodic manual adjusting of the valve lash by loosening the rocker arm and re-tightening it while holding a flat metal gauge between the valve stem and the rocker arm until the metal gauge fit snugly, but still move between the rocker arm and the valve stem. Lash adjusters, or hydraulic lifters, eliminated all this trouble.
Instructions
- 1
Remove the valve covers using whatever tools are necessary from a toolkit. Scrape all gasket material off the cylinder head and the valve cover.
2Remove the intake manifold. Remove the intake manifold gasket.
3Remove the rocker arms. Lift the push rods out of the cylinder head.
4Remove the old lash adjusters from the lifter bores in the engine block.
5Submerse the new lash adjusters in motor oil.
6Lubricate the lash adjuster casing on the sides and bottom with cam lubricant. Slide the Lash adjusters into the lifter bores in the engine block.
7Slide the push rods through the push rod holes in the cylinder head, and set the end of each push rod into the plunger of the new lash adjuster.
8Reinstall the rocker arms. Ensure the push rods sit both in the dimple of the lash adjusters plunger and the dimple in the rocker arm.
9Turn the crankshaft pulley bolt, which will turn the crankshaft, until the number one cylinder is at top dead-center. Adjust the rocker arms, following the lash adjuster manufacturer or engine manufacturers instructions. Repeat for the rest of the cylinders.
10Replace the intake manifold and intake manifold gasket.
11Install a new valve cover gasket in the valve cover. Attach the valve cover to the solider head, completing the replacement of the lash adjusters.
