How to Repair a Hybrid Car

Hybrid vehicles utilize two or more power sources. Different types of hybrid engines run on different power sources. The most common type of engine runs on petroleum in the form of gasoline or diesel combined with an electric motor. This type of engine ranges from full to mild hybrid. Other types of hybrid engines include flex-fuel, plug-in and fuel-cell. Since there are several hybrid engine types, there is not one specific way to repair the components but there are general guidelines to follow when you repair a hybrid vehicle.

    Consult the owners manual to determine the type of engine in the vehicle. Study the troubleshooting guide in the manual. Try solutions in the troubleshooting guide that describe problems associated with the vehicle.

    Obtain a copy of the vehicle warranty. Check to see if the manufacturers warranty covers the perceived problem. Most hybrid vehicles have eight- to 10-year warranties on all hybrid components.

    Call an authorized dealer and make an appointment for vehicle repairs. Be sure the mechanic is certified in hybrid engines.

    Decide whether to pay a certified mechanic to repair the car or whether you want to work on it.

    Write down any required replacement parts. Go to an authorized dealer or auto parts store to purchase replacement parts. Be sure replacement items are specific to the make, model and engine type of the vehicle.

    Install replacement parts per instructions. Refer to the vehicle owners manual for assistance.
