How to Identify Snap on Tool Boxes
Snap-on is an American company that has been producing quality tools since 1920. Originally dismissed by mainstream tool distributors, the company began using independent salespeople, a tradition that continued. The company also re-labeled Blue Point tools to supplement its line of available products. Given the popularity of Snap-on Tools, especially among mechanics, tools and tool boxes have become very collectible. The easiest way to track down the details of your Snap-on product is to use the Collecting Snap-on website, managed by Frank Murch.

Look on the back of your tool box and record the markings. This first stylized number or symbol is the year of manufacture. The next is a "K-series" number, including "K," "KT," "KR," or "KRA." This identifies the specific type and size of box. The final series of numbers is the product number.
2Compare this to the date chart on the website Collecting Snap-on. Each model year after 1927 has its own special way of listing the year, using a stylized number or symbol.
3Access the relevant catalog on the website. Choose "Catalogs" then pick your year range from the drop-down menu and then the specific year.
4Browse the catalog to find your product. The model number should be listed starting with the "K." Most catalogs have a picture and description, including measurements.

How to Identify a 10 Bolt 8 5 inch Posi Rear End
When it comes to getting power to the pavement, GMs 10-bolt, 8.5-inch rear end with Positraction is a hero. Like Superman in street clothes, however, it can be hard to identify this beefy unit among its weaker cousins, the 10-bolt, 8.2-inch with open differential.
GM built countless thousands of both types of 10-bolts from 1970 to 1994. This means you can typically find one suitable for your muscle car dirt-cheap at your local junkyard. Learn how to separate this strong man from the wimps.
Instructions

Wipe any grease and other debris off the gear casing with a rag to ensure you can see all of its features clearly.
2Count to make sure there are 10 bolts arranged equally around the outer perimeter of the gear casing, similar to the numbers on a clock.
3Locate two lugs, or ears, extending out from the bottom of the gear casing approximately in the 4 oclock and 8 oclock position. This will firmly identify the unit as having come with Positraction from the factory.
4Measure the gear casing horizontally, end to end, across its widest point. The measurement will be either 10 5/8 (10.625) inches or 11 inches, depending on the year it was made.
5Look for a bulge running vertically down the center of the gear casing. Most of the 10-inch units youre looking for will have this.
6Place your 1.25-inch socket over the pinion nut. If it fits, its the 10-bolt, 8.5-inch unit.
7Inspect the entire gear case and center section thoroughly to make sure there are no cracks or other damage that might compromise the units integrity.

How to Identify Subaru Parts
If you need to have body work done on your Subaru, select a body shop that uses genuine Subaru parts. When you take your vehicle to a Subaru dealer, you can be sure they use genuine parts. If you take it to another body shop, you can verify that the replacement parts are Subaru-built by a simple examination. If you order parts for a do-it-yourself repair project, there is a way you can confirm that the parts are genuine Subaru parts. Many parts do not have the Subaru name or symbol imprinted on them.

Inspecting Body Work

If you have a fender, door or hood replaced on your vehicle. You can visually inspect it to verify it is a genuine Subaru part.
2Search the inside edges of the replacement part for the name Subaru. Use a flashlight to look for the marking. Hold the flashlight at an angle to the medal edges to spot the name.
3The word "Subaru" will be stamped into the formed sheet metal margin of the body parts. The name is imbedded so it is the same color as the vehicles paint. The size is approximately 3/16 inch tall by 1 3/8 inches long. It may be difficult to see.
Identifying Replacement Parts

A massive number of parts that go into a Subaru will also go into a Mazda, Chevrolet or Ford. The manufacturers who make mechanical parts for Subaru also make parts for other auto makers because some items such as bearings or clutch plates are uniformly sized and formed. Knowing this, there are some replacement parts that you cannot identify as Subaru parts unless they are still in their packaging. Genuine Subaru parts meet Subaru specifications and come in packaging labeled "Genuine Subaru Parts."
5Select a repair shop that pledges to use genuine Subaru replacement parts or take your car to a Subaru dealer.
6Before work begins on your vehicle, ask the repair shop to retain all boxes and bubble packs from the parts they will install on your car. This way you can see that the parts came in Subaru packaging.
7If you plan to work on the car yourself, order parts from a Subaru dealer or online Subaru part supplier.
8Some Subaru parts feature the official Subaru symbol of a six-star constellation. If you have a steering wheel or wheel hubs replaced, you can tell if they are genuine parts because these items feature the star constellation insignia.

How to Identify a Reliance DC Motor
Founded in 1904, Reliance Motors are manufactured by the Baldor Electric Company, a major manufacturer of electrical engines for industrial use. Reliance Motors began with manufacturing direct-current, or DC, motors, because alternating-current was considered dangerous at the time. The variety of Reliance Electric Motors includes different sizes, applications, voltage requirements and numerous other specifications, some of which are custom designed, depending on the intended use of the motor. Identifying Reliance DC motors requires locating the Baldor Identification nameplate found on the motor housing.

Find the Baldor/Reliance identification nameplate on the exterior of the motor. The ID nameplate is normally riveted to the motor in an obvious location, with the Baldor/Reliance corporate name featured on the top of the nameplate. You may need all of the information found on the nameplate to narrow down the possible motor options.
2Locate the Baldor/Reliance model and frame numbers on the identification nameplate. The nameplate contains a variety of codes and specifications, each with an identifying heading. The Reliance model and frame numbers are normally found at the top of the name plate, under the Reliance Electric corporate name. Example numbers are: frame "C1811ATCZ" and model "T18R1009."
3Reference the Baldor/Reliance model and frame numbers to the Baldor DC motor catalog. Locating the Reliance DC motor model number in the Baldor catalog will further identify the motor in question. A motor with the frame number "C1811ATCZ" and model number "T18R1009" is identified as a RPM III Shunt Wound SCR drive motor, with 240V armature, 240V field and power code C, when referenced in the Baldor Catalog. If the model number is not available in the catalog, you can reference the motor using the the frame number.

How to Identify Part Numbers on Carter Carburetors
Carter carburetors, like other carburetors, are mechanical devices that combine fuel and air to create the correct mixture for combustion in an engine. A carburetor regulates the ratio of air and fuel and keeps the engines operation at optimum level. As with any mechanical part, knowing the part numbers can be helpful should you need to fix part of it or replace it.

Park the vehicle in an area away from traffic, turn off the engine and engage the handbrake.
2Open the hood of the vehicle and locate the Carter carburetor, which will be under the air cleaner. Loosen and remove the wing nut on the air cleaner with your fingers, and lift off the air cleaner to access the carburetor.
3On the side of the carburetor, look for the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) tag which has the part numbers engraved on it.
4Identify the numbers on the carburetor that are either stamped on the body itself or on the sides, depending on the model of carburetor.

How to Identify a TH350 Transmission
The TH350 transmission was developed by General Motors as a replacement for the two-speed powerglide transmission. GM used the TH350 in their vehicles starting in 1968 and was found in almost all rear-wheel drive GM vehicles through 1984. If you have a GM car that falls within these model years, there is a good chance you have a TH350. With a few easy steps, you can identify whether your car has a TH350 transmission or not.

Place wheel chocks around the back tires to secure the vehicle from movement. Raise the vehicle using your jack. Place the jack stands securely under the frame rails and lower the vehicle onto the stands.
2Crawl under your vehicle and locate the transmission. The TH350 is always used in rear-wheel drive vehicles, so the location is always the same, right at the back of the engine.
3Count the number of bolts that hold on the transmission oil pan on. This is the pan bolted to the bottom of the transmission. If you count 13 bolts, youve narrowed your transmission model down to only two: a TH350 or TH400.
4Look at the shape of the transmission oil pan. The pan on a TH 350 is square in shape, with one corner cut off, resulting in a five-sided pan.
5Measure the length of the transmission from the front, using your measuring tape, where it bolts to the rear of the engine to the end of the transmission, where the tailshaft housing bolts on. Do not measure the tailshaft housing, which is the cone-shaped adapter bolted to the rear of the transmission. This distance will be 22 to 22 inches on a TH350.
6Look for the vacuum modulator. It will be on the side of the transmission and have a rubber vacuum line attached to it. If this fitting is on the right front of the transmission, you have a TH350. On the similar TH400 it is attached at the right rear of the transmission.
7Look to see if there is a cable running to the side of the transmission, close to where the shifter linkage is located. Verify that this cable runs up to the engine. This is a kickdown cable, and the TH350 transmission has this feature, where the TH400 does not.
8Locate the stampings on the side of the transmission. The TH350 had part codes M33, M38 & M39. The TH350C, which is a TH350 with a lock up torque converter, had part codes MV4, MX2, MX3 & MX5.
