How to Adjust the Parking Brake on a 1995 Mustang

How to Adjust the Parking Brake on a 1995 Mustang

You can adjust the parking brake on your 1995 Ford Mustang right from your driveway or garage. Doing so will save you time and money. You can test whether or not your parking brake needs an adjustment by positioning it downhill and trying to hold the vehicle in place using only the parking brake. If it doesnt hold and the Mustang starts to slip, you need to adjust it. The good news is that it takes only one simple tool that you probably already have at home.

Instructions

    1

Find the center console cover and remove it by pressing the release levers on the sides and pulling up on it. This is located between the front passengers seat and the drivers seat.

    2

Lift up the parking brake handle four clicks.

    3

Find the adjuster nut at the end of the cable rod. Loosen the nut with the pliers but take care that the nut doesnt fall off.

    4

Lower the parking brake lever all the way. Turn the nut with the pliers until it is very close to the parking brake handle.

    5

Lift up the parking brake handle to its highest position, then lower it all the way to the lowest position. Do this four times. This will set the brake adjustment.

    6

Put the center console cover back in place.

    7

Test the parking brake adjustment by positioning the vehicle on a downward facing slope and try to hold the Mustang in place using only the parking brake. If it holds the vehicle in place, then you have done the adjustment correctly.

How to Adjust a CVT

How to Adjust a CVT

Many motorists who desire improved fuel economy, more power and a smoother drive will opt for an automobile with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) clutch rather than a traditional automatic transmission. In theory, this transmission uses a pulley and belt system to provide the driver with an unlimited number of gears. If your car has a CVT, you can adjust the CVT to improve your vehicles fuel economy and your driving experience even further.

Instructions

    1

Find the CVT clutch under the hood of your car. The clutch is in different places in different models, but you can find it near your engine. The clutch contains two large steel circles connected with a rubber belt. Lightly sand the CVT clutch with fine sand paper. This reduces wear and tear of the clutch and improves the surface grip of the belt. Use brake cleaner to clean the remaining part of the clutch and wipe it dry with a rag.

    2

Increase the variator roller weight on the clutch. Use your wrench to twist the roller weights onto the bolts visible on the wheel of the clutch. A higher weight increases the speed for each position of the belt. The converse is true for a lower weight.

    3

Adjust the torque of the CVT clutch. You can tighten or loosen the belt that connects to the hydraulics to change the torque. Use a wrench to slowly tighten or loosen the screws around the belt. You can find these screws around the center of the wheel. Tightening the screws will increase tension and torque, which will provide more power. Loosening the belt will reduce torque, providing a smoother driving experience.

How to Adjust the Camber on a 1988 Mustang

The definition of camber angle in your 1988 Mustang is: the inward or outward tilt of the top of the tire as viewed from the front of the car. Making a camber adjustment on the 1988 Mustang is a matter of moving the position of the upper strut mount relative to the lower ball joint. Moving the strut mount in toward the center of the Mustang will cause camber to be more negative and moving it out away from the center will cause camber to be more positive. The goal of the camber adjustment is to provide good steering stability, with minimal tire wear.

Instructions

    1

Park the car on a level surface with the steering wheel pointed straight ahead and level. Apply the parking brake and secure the front wheels with wheel chocks wedged in front of and behind the wheels.

    2

Attach the camber gauge to the front wheel following the instructions supplied with the gauge set. This varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, and you should do it according to the manufacturers instructions to prevent damage to the gauge or wheel.

    3

Locate the camber adjustment point on the upper strut mount. In the 1988 Mustang, this is on top of the strut towers on either side of the engine compartment. The strut mount plate is bolted to the strut tower and the adjuster is pop-riveted to the strut tower.

    4

Remove the pop rivet by drilling the head off the rivet, using a 1/4-inch drill bit, and pushing the body of the rivet through the strut tower using a center punch. An alternative method is to cut the rivet head off with a hammer and chisel before pushing the rivet through the tower.

    5

Place a floor jack under the front lower control arm and lift the wheel slightly off the ground. Using a wrench, loosen the three 15-mm nuts that attach the mount to the tower.

    6

Insert a pry bar between the strut tower and the mount and pry the mount, in the direction necessary, to adjust the camber. Move the mount until the camber gauge shows .5 degrees +/- .25 negative camber. Tighten the strut tower nuts and lower the car to the ground. Repeat the process for the opposite side of the car.

    7

Lower the floor jack and bounce the front of the car to settle the chassis. Recheck the camber reading with the car on the ground. Readjust the camber as necessary until the camber readings on both sides are within specifications and within .5 degrees camber of each other.

How to Adjust a Chrysler Headlamp

How to Adjust a Chrysler Headlamp

If you are relying on your high-beams more often than usual or have motorists flashing their lights at you even though you do not have your high-beams on, you may need to adjust the headlamps on your Chrysler. Your Chryslers headlamps provide you the light you need to see safely during nighttime driving. If your headlamps are incorrectly adjusted, the pattern they project can be inadequate and can also blind oncoming drivers. Periodically verifying and adjusting the aim of your Chryslers headlamps will give the the ideal nighttime visibility.

Instructions

    1

Find a flat surface that is adjacent to a large wall. You will need a level surface that extends at least 30-feet from the wall. Pull your vehicle close the the wall as straight as possible.

    2

Mark the center line of your Chrysler on the wall using the masking tape. Coolbulbs.com recommends using a yardstick placed on the hood ornament and extended to the wall to get a precise mark. Measure the center of one headlight from the ground and from the center of one headlight to the center of the vehicle. Using more tape, transfer these measurements to the wall to mark the horizontal and vertical center lines of each headlamp beam.

    3

Measure 25-feet away from the wall and park the Chrysler there. Be sure to keep the vehicle perpendicular to the wall, if the vehicle is crooked it will skew the adjustments.

    4

The adjustment screws on Chryslers are located on top of the headlight assembly. Locate these screws and determine which screws control the vertical headlamp movement and which adjust the horizontal aim. You will most likely only need to adjust the vertical alignment of your Chryslers headlamps. Several manufacturers do not recommend adjusting the horizontal headlamp aim.

    5

Adjust the headlamp beams until they are two inches below the horizontal lines and two inches to the right of the vertical lines by turning the adjustment screws. Adjust each plane separately for the greatest accuracy. In this position your Chrysler headlamps will project the most efficient beam pattern without blinding other drivers.

How to Adjust the Parking Brake Cable on a 1995 Toyota Pickup

How to Adjust the Parking Brake Cable on a 1995 Toyota Pickup

Its time to adjust your 1995 Toyota pickup parking brake when it doesnt hold your vehicle in park. This is especially apparent when you are parked facing downhill. On older model trucks such as those built in 1995 this is a periodic adjustment you should make to ensure that the parking brake functions properly. It requires only a few tools that most backyard mechanics have on hand.

Instructions

    1

Release and lower the hand brake down as far as it will go.

    2

Find the center console cover that houses the parking brake lever. This can be found between the drivers seat and the front passengers seat. Find two screws on either side of the cover and remove them with a screwdriver. Lift off the center console cover.

    3

Look for two nuts attached to two rods that are poking out of a metal plate. Tighten the nuts carefully. Check the parking brake to see how many clicks it moves up. Keep tightening the nuts until you have adjusted the parking so that it clicks three times when you pull up on it.

    4

Put the center console cover back in place. Put the screws in and tighten them with the screwdriver.

How to Adjust Rhoads Lifters

Proper adjustment of Rhoads lifters, or any hydraulic lifters, is crucial to engine performance. If the rocker arms are not tight enough, tappet noises or bent push rods may result. If the rocker arms are too tight, the lifter may bottom out or the valve may not completely close, causing either poor engine performance or internal engine damage. While all that seems scary and adjusting Rhoads lifters is a time-consuming proposition, the procedure is relatively simple.

Instructions

    1

Bring the piston in the No. 1 cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke. TDC, or top dead center is when the piston reaches the top of its travel and both the intake and exhaust valves are closed. Both the intake and exhaust lifters will be sitting on the low sides of their respective cam lobes when the piston is in TDC.

    2

Tighten the rocker arms on that cylinder using any tools necessary from a toolkit until the push rods starts compressing each lifters plunger. Continue tightening the rocker arms until the push rods compress the plungers cylinder 1/16 inch below the retaining ring. This normally takes three-quarters of a turn on the nut.

    3

    Repeat for all other cylinders.

How to Adjust the Parking Brake on a 92 95 Honda Civic

How to Adjust the Parking Brake on a 92-95 Honda Civic

You can adjust the parking brake on your 1992 to 1995 Honda Civic right from your home garage, saving you time and money. You only need a few simple tools that most backyard mechanics have on hand already. You can tell when it is time to adjust your parking brake when the Honda starts to slip when you are parked downhill and have engaged the parking brake.

Instructions

    1

Look for the covers on the screws that hold the center console cover on top of the parking brake. Remove those covers using a Phillips screwdriver then remove the screws underneath.

    2

Push the console cover back and up to lift it off of the parking brake.

    3

Find the parking brake cable and the adjuster nut attached to it. Use a wrench to tighten the nut.

    4

Put wheel chocks in front of and behind the front wheels of your vehicle. Put the jack under the rear end of the Honda and raise the vehicle up high enough to slide jack stands under the vehicle, next to both rear wheels. Lower the car onto the jack stands.

    5

Verify your adjustment by lifting up on the parking brake until it clicks twice. Spin the rear wheels to make sure there is some resistance. Pull up four more clicks on the parking brake lever. When you try to spin the rear wheels, they shouldnt move at all.

    6

Raise up the Honda using the jack, remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle to the ground. Remove the wheel chocks from behind the front wheels.

    7

Place the center console back on and tighten the screws with the screwdriver. Put the covers back on top of the screws.

How to Adjust a Quadrajet

How to Adjust a Quadrajet

Back when it was introduced in the early 1960s, the Quadrajet was hailed as fuel delivery technology. The design was meant to help with maximum fuel economy as well as low exhaust emissions. Many mechanics of the time were unfamiliar how to work on it and designated it a "junk" carburetor. However, modern day mechanics realize that they are fairly easy to tune up, and with slight adjustments, they can have your car running at its best.

Instructions

    1

Gather your tools and safety gear along with your Quadrajet manual. It is a good idea to run through and familiarize yourself with the diagrams and instructions in it.

    2

Look for the adjustment screws. They are often found on the Quadrajets barrel side. You want to turn the screws hard enough to bottom them out. When they reach all the way down, screw them back in two complete turns.

    3

Crank the car and let the engine idle. Give it time to warm the motor up.

    4

Locate the carburetors vacuum hose and disconnect it. Then take the tachometer and hook it to the vacuum port. If it does not hold to the vacuum port, you may need to replace it since it can cause the vehicle to flood or run rich.

    5

Begin adjusting the screws one by one. Continue this until the tachometer reaches the highest rating. After the meter peaks, repeat the adjustments.

    6

Complete the adjustments by setting the idle to 1,000 RPMs with the car in park.
