Same as New

A transmission rebuilt by a competent mechanic should be as clean and serviceable as a new unit. Check the service interval recommendation for your vehicle, and follow it. Depending on the make and model of the vehicle, the recommended service interval may range from 25,000 to 100,000 miles; some cars may never require this service.

Change at 5K

Transmission rebuilds can become expensive; replacing your transmission will cost even more. For peace of mind, if for no other reason, change the transmission oil and filter in a rebuilt transmission after 5,000 miles. Some shops require a 5K oil and filter change as a condition of their warranty and will include this work at no additional charge.

Bottom Line

Change a rebuilt transmissions oil and filter at 5,000 miles---especially if not doing so will void the warranty. After that point, rely on the manufacturers recommendation for maintenance intervals.

Most Harley-Davidsons are powered by technologically primitive engines. Critics call them "de-engineered." The basic nature of the machines is part of their charm for an aging customer base. The V-Rod is Harleys modern motorcycle intended to appeal to both younger and traditional customers. The V-Rod was designed to look more traditional than it actually is, so Harley designed its "air box" to look like a gas tank. Older bikers often assume it is the gas tank. The air filter is inside this air box; once you understand what to open and how, changing this filter should take less than five minutes.

Instructions

Stand on the right side of the motorcycle and lift the right side of the seat. After a gentle tug, the seat will pivot up.

Turn the retaining ring on the back of the outer air box cover 1/4 turn counterclockwise. The outer air box cover is styled to look like a conventional Harley gas tank. Lift the outer air box cover off the bike and set it aside.

Disconnect the intake air temperature sensor at the rear of the inner air box cover by pulling the two halves of the connector apart. The sensor is clearly visible on recent V-Rods. Early V-Rods located this sensor on the engine, and if it is there, you do not need to disconnect it.

Unfasten the eight clips that secure the top of the inner air box, using a flathead screwdriver. There is one clip in front of the box, one in back and three on each side of the inner air box.

Unscrew the wing nut that holds the air filter in place. Remove the old filter by pulling up, and either reinstall the original after servicing or install a new filter. Drop the new or serviced filter back on the mounting stud and retighten the wing nut.

Resecure the inner air box top to the mounting clips. Reconnect the air temperature sensor.

Push the outer air box cover back in place. Push down the seat.

Harley Davidson brand motorcycles utilize three main spin-on oil filter types depending upon the model. Each type of filter is distinguished by general size, thread size, bypass valve, and anti-drain back valve compatibility. In addition, each of the three types are available from a variety of manufacturers available at major retailers and auto supply stores, as well as through specialty motorcycle part suppliers. The model and year of the motorcycle determines the correct spin-on oil filter to be used.

3 Inch to 3.5 Inch Length

The most common oil filter for Harley Davidson motorcycles, additional specifications for this oil filter include 3/4 inch by 16 tpi threads, 8 psi bypass valve, and an anti-drain back valve. This size oil filter is best suited for several Harley Davidson models. It is used for the Harley Davidson XL Sportster manufactured from 1984 to 2007, the XLH Sportster, manufactured from 1954 to 1987; FLH model, manufactured from 1953 to 1982; the CH6060 FX, manufactured from 1983 to 1987; Evo 80, manufactured from 1984 to 1999; Evo 88, manufactured from 1999 to 2006; and Evo 96, manufactured from 2007 to the present. The following models of this oil filter type are available: Purolator PL14476 / PL14477, Mobil1 M1-102, Bosch 3330, Walmart Supertech ST4967/4386, AMSOil SMF 133/134/135, Baldwin B33/B37, Fram PH4967, Hastings LF410/LF 413, NAPA 1394, Purolator ML16822, and WIX 51394/51396.

2.5 Inch to 3.5 Inch Length

Utilized only in the V-Rod Harley Davidson model motorcycles, all years, this filter boasts 20 by 1.5 millimeter threads, a 14 psi pass valve, an anti-drain pass valve, and a 2.3 inch O.D. gasket. The following models of this oil filter type are available: AC Delco PF2135, AMSOil SMF103, Carquest 85358, AC Delco PF2135, FRAM PH6017A, Honda 15410-MCJ-000, K&N KN-204, NAPA Gold 1358, Purolator ML16817, STP SMO 17, and WIX 51358.

Various Lengths

The final type of oil valve utilized in Harley Davidson motorcycles, is also the second most common but does not have the standard length seen in the other models. This type of filter is used in FX model bikes manufactured from 1971 to 1982, as well as CH6067 FXE, FXS and FXWG models manufactured from 1982 to1986. Specifications for the filter include 16 by 1.5 millimeter threads, an 8 psi bypass valve, and an anti-drain back valve. The following models of this oil filter type are available: AMSOil SMF 132/132C, EMGO 10-26980, Fram PH6019 and PH6074, K&N KN-153, NAPA 7013 and WIX 57013.

While an air filter cleans the air for your Tundras engine, the cabin air filter removes the dust, small air particles and outside odors before they reach the passenger compartment. In 2000 Toyota started installing cabin air filters in Tundras at the factory. Toyota recommends changing the cabin air filter every 10,000 miles, however, dustier conditions may require replacement more often. Breathe a little easier by replacing your Tundras cabin air filter.

Open the glove box and remove any contents you may have in it. Using your Philips screwdriver, remove the screw on the lower-right side of the glove box. Pull the loop holding the glove box to the dashboard off the cylinder next to where the screw was located.

Remove the glove box. Press firmly on the sides of the glove box and pull it to the front of the dashboard. Then lift the glove box off its hinges and out of the dashboard.

Remove the cabin air filters plastic cover. Squeeze the side of the covers tabs together. Slide the Tundras old filter out face up to keep the debris from spilling.

Insert the new cabin air filter. There is an up arrow to show you the correct direction in which to insert the filter. Replace the plastic filter cover.

Re-install the glove box. Slide the glove box back on its hinges until it snaps back inside the dashboard. Replace the loop over the cylinder and screw on the lower right side.
