The Best Way to Clean Threadlock Out of a Nut
Threadlock compound is a paste-like or liquid substance designed to seal the threads of metallic nuts and bolts. After applying threadlocker compound to the threads of a bolt, the substance will harden, providing an airtight and waterproof seal. Many automotive, industrial and hobby applications call for the use of threadlocker during assembly and repair tasks associated with certain components. Removing this hardened compound from a nut is an easy task, with the correct tools and supplies available.

Peel off any thick portions of the threadlock from the nut, using a pair of small tweezers to gain access to the threads.
2Apply a liberal amount of comparable threadlocker to the threaded portion of the nut. Allow the applied compound to soak into the threads and soften the old hardened threadlock.
3Wipe off the threadlock, using a clean shop rag or paper towel. Put on a pair of thick leather gloves and clean out the remaining threadlocker with a sharp hobby knife. If any residue remains on the threads, move on to the next steps.
4Secure the nut with a C-clamp or bench vice. Apply heat to the nut, using a lighter or propane torch. Do not operate the lighter or torch around flammable liquids, gasses or solid materials. Heat the nut until the hardened threadlock turns to ash.
5Allow the nut to cool sufficiently. Remove the nut from the clamp and clean out any remaining residue from the threads, using the hobby knife. Wipe off the outside portion of the nut with a clean towel to complete the process.

How to Use a Lug Nut Key
Getting a flat tire is frustrating; not being able to remove the flat tire is maddening. Automobiles are provided with all the necessary equipment to change a tire: a jack to raise the car; a "doughnut" or spare tire to help you get home or to a service station to repair your tire; and a tire iron to remove the lug nuts that are keeping your now wounded or deflated tire securely on your car. The tire iron, or lug wrench, also doubles as a lug wrench key, and is specifically designed to help remove the lug nuts on the tire. Using the lug nut key correctly can accelerate the tire changing process.

Examine the lug nuts on the tire and determine if there is a locking lug nut. Typically the locking lug nut will have a different head, either rounded or with a design.
2Place the lug nut key on the locking lug nut, making sure that the key is on the nut securely.
3Turn the lug nut key clockwise to loosen the lug nut. If the lug nut is on too tightly, step downwards on the lug nut key for added force. Remove the lug nut by unscrewing it.
4Continue loosening and removing the remaining lug nuts with the lug nut key in the same fashion.

How to Loosen an Alternator Pulley Nut
An alternator provides power to your vehicle while charging your vehicles battery. The alternator turns via a belt that runs over the top of a drive pulley. When changing a bad alternator or installing under-drive pulleys, you will need to remove the pulley from the front of the alternator. A large nut located on the front of the pulley secures it to the alternator shaft. Loosening the alternator nut allows you to separate the drive pulley from the alternator.

Spray penetrating oil on the alternator nut. Allow the penetrating oil to soak on the nut for two to three hours before continuing.
2Put a heavy leather glove on your non-dominant hand.
3Match an impact socket from a socket set to the nut located at the front of the alternator pulley. Attach the socket to an electric impact wrench.
4Hold the alternator shaft directly behind the pulley with your gloved hand. Slide the socket attached to the impact wrench onto the alternator nut. Set the direction of the impact wrench to counterclockwise.
5Pull the trigger of the impact wrench as you apply pressure to the alternator shaft with your hand. Continue until the nut breaks loose of the pulley.

Installation Instructions for the Teflon Insert Jam Nut
A jam nut is used in the same area as a locking washer and performs the same duty. Jam nuts are thinner than a traditional nut and contain a Teflon lining inside to hold tightly to bolt threads and secure it in place. Tightening a traditional nut on top of a jam nut causes stress on the jam nut and reverses the bolt strains so that each nut presses on the threads in opposite directions. Installing jam nuts on mechanical components that vibrate will keep the nuts from loosening.

Insert a washer onto a hex head bolt and push it down to the head. Insert the threaded end of the hex head bolt into the items you are holding together. Slide a washer onto the end of the bolt threads and push it toward the material it is holding together.
2Insert a Teflon insert jam nut onto the protruding end of the bolt. Turn the nut clockwise and tighten it by hand. Tighten the jam nut completely with an adjustable wrench.
3Insert a nut on the protruding end of the bolt. Hand-tighten the nut clockwise and then tighten it completely on top of the jam nut with an adjustable wrench.
