How to Install a Chrome Customizer Kit for a 2001 Sportster

How to Install a Chrome Customizer Kit for a 2001 Sportster

There are a few dress up kits on the market, the most common being the "Harley Sportster Chrome Customizer Kit for 91-03 XL" marketed by Tedd Cycle, Inc. of Newburgh, New York. The companys word mark is V-Twin Manufacturing. All of these dress up kits cover engine components, like the primary cover, with a thin, chromed veneer so the motorcycle will look like those components have been disassembled and custom chromed. Your kit should include a veneer for the primary cover, cam cover, transmission cover and mounting hardware. These veneers tend to discolor and they may interfere with the radiation of engine heat. They go on in 20 minutes and they come off in 20 minutes, too.

Instructions

    1

Fit the Chrome Customizer primary cover veneer over the Sportsters primary cover on the left side of the motorcycle. Daub red touch up paint on the primary cover bolt heads under the 5 bolt holes in the customizer kit veneer.

    2

Remove the primary cover veneer. Remove only the bolts daubed with red paint with an Allen socket and a socket wrench or breaker bar.

    3

Put the bolts you remove in a plastic sandwich bag and store them in a safe and memorable place because you may want to reinstall them.

    4

Fit the chrome customizer kit veneer snugly over the outer primary cover. Fasten the veneer to the primary by replacing the original bolts you just removed with the slightly longer bolts included with your Chrome Customizer Kit.

    5

Tighten the bolts only wrench tight with an Allen socket and a socket wrench.

    6

Repeat exactly the same procedures with the cam cover and the transmission cover on the right side of the motorcycle.

How to Use a Sportster Oil Tank

Your Sportster engine contains thousands of mostly metal parts that move at up to 5,000 revolutions per minute. The three quarts of oil in your Sportster oil tank minimizes friction between these parts, scavenges worn metal and carbon from gasoline combustion and helps carry excess heat out of the engine through the exhaust. Maintenance on your Sportster oil tank includes checking, adding and changing the oil.

Instructions

    1

Remove the cap from the top of the oil tank on the right side of the bike. Wipe the dipstick attached to the cap with a clean rag.

    2

Inspect the oil on the rag. The blacker it is, the more carbon it contains and the more likely the oil is saturated and worn out.

    3

Reinsert the dipstick fully into the oil tank. Remove the dipstick and look at where the oil is on the dipstick. If the oil level is below the mark on the dipstick that says "add oil" you should add oil.

    4

Add a third of a quart of 20W-50 motorcycle oil to the oil tank. Read the oil level on the dipstick. If still low, add another third of a quart of oil and read the dipstick again. Repeat these steps until the oil reaches the mark on the dipstick that reads "full."

    5

Replace the oil in the oil tank at least every 3,000 miles. Begin to drain the oil from the oil tank by removing the oil filler cap.

    6

Loosen the oil drain hose from the clip under the oil tank with a screwdriver or your fingers. Put a drain pan under the motorcycle.

    7

Aim the end of the drain hose into the drain pan. Loosen the hose clamp near the end of the drain hose with a screwdriver.

    8

Remove the metal plug inside the end of the drain hose with a pair of pliers. Drain all the used oil into the drain pan.

    9

Replace the metal plug and hose clamp and remove the pan. Replace the drain hose in the clip.

    10

Place the drain pan under the front of the motorcycle. Remove the black or chrome oil filter on the front right of the Sportster with an oil filter wrench.

    11

Drain the oil from the filter into the drain pan. Clean up spilled oil with rags. Discard the old filter.

    12

Smear clean oil on the oil filters rubber gasket with your finger to help the gasket swell tight. Hand tighten the new oil filter on the oil filter stud.

    13

Add three quarts of new oil to the oil tank.

How to Install an Engine Guard on a Sportster

How to Install an Engine Guard on a Sportster

There are, it is commonly said, only two kinds of bikers: those who have crashed and those who will crash. Engine guards help protect rider and motorcycle whenever the motorcycle goes over on one side. Most of these accidents are at low speed, or even with the motorcycle stopped, and when that happens the guards dont protect engines so much as everything else on the lower front of the bike. In the kind of crashes that make wonderful stories, the ones that happen on freeways at speed, engine guards significantly improve a riders chances of emerging from the hospital with both legs and both feet. Engine guards are an easy bolt-on.

Instructions

    1

Remove the three screws and the one flat washer from under the steering head with an Allen socket.

    2

Remove and discard the two top motor mount bolts, washers and nuts using a socket wrench, a hex socket and an open-end wrench.

    3

Insert the long screw that was packed with your engine guard through the top motor mount. Use the spacer that came with the engine guard if your Sportster does not have forward controls. Do not use the spacer if you have installed forward controls on your bike.

    4

Fasten the long screw to the engine mount with the washer and lock nut that came with your engine guard. Ensure that neither the oil pressure switch nor the wiring harness are effected, and then tighten the lock nut with a hex socket.

    5

Attach the engine guard upper mounting bracket (on top of the engine guard) to the open holes under the steering head. Use the original three screws and washer for Sportsters built after 1994. Use the hardware that came with the engine guard for earlier Sportsters.

    6

Attach the lower bracket to the engine guard with the included long bolt and hex nut. Tighten the nut to 30 foot-pounds of torque with a hex socket and torque wrench.

    7

Turn the handlebars all the way right and left and check for interference by the engine guard with the clutch and brake cables.

How to Remove the Battery From a Sportster 1200 Low

How to Remove the Battery From a Sportster 1200 Low

Without a fully functional battery, no motorcycle is operational. As goes the battery, so goes a bikes performance. While removing the battery from most motorcycles requires you to simply access the battery compartment below the bikes seat and disconnect the terminal wires, Harley Sportster 1200s designed the battery compartment such that the negative terminal is directly connected to the bikes frame. Consequently, removing the battery from a Sportster 1200 Low is a slightly more complicated procedure than it is with most other motorcycles.

Instructions

    1

Remove the black plastic cover for the battery compartment. The cover is located underneath the seat on the left side of the bike. Remove it by gently pulling on the top of the cover to unsnap its top clip. This should allow you to easily remove the entire cover and set it aside.

    2

Slide the plastic electronic battery harness to the right of the battery to access the negative terminal.

    3

Remove the bracket connecting the negative ("-") terminal to the frame of your Sportster with a socket wrench. The negative terminal grounds the battery. Removing it first will allow you to remove the wires connecting the positive ("+") terminal without shocking yourself.

    4

Pull the wires connected to the positive terminal off by hand.

    5

Cover the negative terminal with black electrical tape. This will protect you against accidentally touching the terminal to the frame, thereby grounding the battery and potentially shocking yourself.

    6

Slide the battery out of the compartment.
